art shows!

I'm sure many of you Richmondites have already been to these galleries because of the First Friday art walk. I had to share how much I love these artists! :)

Here are some photos from the art opening of my wonderful glass professor, Sayaka Suzuki! She made these amazing little glass veggies that I was convinced were edible. Some were complimented by these beautifully crafted home recipes. (she makes amazing zucchini bread!) You can see us having a loving moment in the last photo! <3

Her show took place at Quirk Gallery in the Vault Room, it'll probably be up till the end of the month, so don't hesitate to check it out!

So, right after Sayaka's opening, we ventured to the phenomenal Josh George's show. Sadly I didn't get a picture of the artist with his work, but I got a lovely photo of Geraldine Duskin, one of the owners of Ghostprint Gallery (the location).

This show blew my mind! I love the combination of the shredded paper, vibrant colors and intimidating sizes of his works. Again, if anyone's in town, definitely check it out before it's too late!!!

glass foot monster: Complete.

Finally!!

I haven't had a chance to post for a while because I have been SOO busy. I'm talking about class from 9 to 5 and every night in the studio till 2 or 3 am making making making...and getting really dirty.

This project has actually been done for a good week now. I've been working on a hollow form that went in the kiln today. (YAY!)

Ya, so the lighting makes it hard to see the details because I really want everyone to see the noses, lips and ears. After this piece came out of the kiln, I must have spent a good 10 - 12 hours in the cold-shop grinding and grinding and grinding. The reservoir was attached at the top, so I had to carve all the noses back in.

The harsh transition from the red to white was pretty cool because it made the foot flow into the red stream. The red stream was made from liquid latex mixed with some acrylic paint(for color correctness). It's really fun when it dries and peeled right off.

Anyway, it was very tiring, but sooo worth it. The critique went great and I'm looking forward to my new mold coming out ahhhh!

photo narrative

Here is a project I did for my photographic principles class with Tyler Darden. The purpose of the project was were for us to play with at least three different lighting and to use them in a narrative. Mine, as you can see, is about a dog (who you are supposed to think is suuuper cute) who ends up getting loose on his walk and then dies tragically. Since the subject matter is kind of cliche, it gave me more motive to play with the composition of the photos. I love abstract photography, so I think some came out pretty nice!

Poor Bronson didn't like posing for the last one. He got a treat in the end! :)

experimenting!

Sooo, I'm taking a drawing class with Reni Gower and for our newest assignment we're using pastels and other media to create images from life. I did these in class and thought they were really cute, so I'm thinking of going with this technique. I drew in white gel pen then colored with the oil pastel and to finish, I used some sumi ink to enclose the objects. Yay!

These sketches are a result of a people not wanting sushi bad enough, so here are my coworkers being bored! The pages were pre-painted and I used the calligraphy marker! I might go in later and paint some more on top, or go in digitally.

crayon prints >,> and Hawthorne Gallery!

Alrightyyy! Last night I had a little fun with the hot plate and crayons :) I realized that I should experiment with layering since the process is very much like printing, so I did. I'm super happy with the results. It was cool to play with the idea of x-ray vision with the first two. The last one was actually the first that I tried and I believe it is my favorite( even though the alignment is off.) She lost her shoe! ...and of course my cute wittle hammerhead :)...OH!

.....speaking of hammerheads!

I recreated my smashed sheet glass hammerhead shark and got it in the little Hawthorne Gallery (till Friday, Oct. 1) located on the second floor of the Fine Arts Building! If you're around, you should check it out!
